How Kargil hero helped Kashmir girl speak again

NOIDA: Ruksana was six when she witnessed her father's murder at the hands of militants in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir in 1999. Silenced by shock, the girl had gone into a shock and stopped speaking after that.

The same year, Capt Vijyant Thapar, a 22-year-old Army officer, was posted in the district with a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir rifles. Thapar had come from the 2 Rajputana Rifles in Gwalior.

When the young officer came to know about Ruksana's plight, he went to her school to meet her. The two formed an instant bond that grew stronger with each subsequent meeting. Thapar and a friend, sepoy Jagmal Singh Shekhawat, would carry sweets and chocolates for Ruksana. They also took her to a doctor to help her with her speech. Slowly, Ruksana recovered from the trauma of her father's death and started speaking again.

But in June that year, Thapar died during the battle of Tololing Knoll in Kargil. Before embarking on the mission, he wrote to his family, asking them to take care of Ruksana. He described his bond and deep love for Ruksana in the letter and asked his family to "keep sending some money to Ruksana every month", his father Col Virender Nath Thapar (retd), told TOI on Friday.

The senior Thapar (73) lives in Noida and the family continues to keep in touch with Ruksana and sends her money annually. "I had gone to Jammu & Kashmir last month and met Ruksana. She is now 20 and lives with her mother." Ruksana's father was a woodcutter.

Capt Vijyant Thapar was commissioned on December 12, 1998. His father said he had barely stayed in Gwalior for a month before he was moved to Kashmir.

"He was on a mission to capture Knoll when a fireball struck him on his head and he fell in the arms of his comrade Naik Tilak Singh. His martyrdom will continue to inspire the young generation," said his father.

In the letter he wrote before the Tololing assault, Thapar said, "By the time you get this letter I'll be observing you all from the sky while enjoying the hospitality of apsaras. I have no regrets, in fact if I am born a human again, I'll join the Army and fight for my nation."

He was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously. The Gautam Budh Nagar administration has also named a road in front of the GIP mall after him.

Man poses as groom to catch girl's trafficker

NEW DELHI: A clever idea by a braveheart saved the day for a teenager who had been trafficked from West Bengal some time ago and subsequently 'married' off.

About one-and-a-half months ago, the girl had gone to a village shop with her friend to get their jewellery repaired. They met two local youths at the shop. The boys offered them cold drinks laced with sedatives and trafficked them to Delhi. Here, they were turned over to an 'agent'.

The girls were first kept confined at Anand Vihar for a day and then moved to Nangloi for three days. One of them was then 'married' off to a man in Rewadi. The 'agent' had sold them separately at different rates. Plucking up her courage, the 16-year-old then made a call to a distant relative, an uncle. She informed him of her ordeal. The man, who was located in West Bengal, then informed his friend living in Delhi, who carried out the rescue.

The friend took the number of the girl's 'husband' and asked the girl to come to Delhi. The girl, somehow, managed to escape and took a train to Old Delhi railway station. She was picked up there by the friend. The man then called the 'husband'. He asked him where he had got his 'bride' and told him that he, himself, also wanted to get married. The crook passed him the number of the 'agent'.

The friend then called the agent and asked for a 'bride'. He said he was willing to pay whatever was required. "He asked me for Rs 2,500 to spend a day with her. He said if I like the girl and agree to marry her, I will have to give him Rs 1 lakh. I agreed because I wanted to get him arrested," said the man.

The two set up a meeting. When the 'agent' came to Chanakyapuri with the girl, the man, who was accompanied by members of NGO Chintan, overpowered him and rescued the girl.

The girl later said she had been sold to someone in Nangloi and then further passed to someone in Rewadi for Rs 80,000. She said she was beaten up regularly.

The agent has been identified as Ram Bhavan (36). His wife, Laxmi, has also been booked. After making a PCR call, Ram was taken to Chanakyapuri police station. Suspecting a racket at work, police have informed their West Bengal counterparts. A search is on for the friend ofthe 16-year-old.
